Yesterday, JCSRS held a staff meeting to celebrate the neuro-affirming approaches we value. We reflected on our 9 Benchmarks:
- Value the lived experience of neurodivergent people - Use neurodivergent affirming language - Respect bodily autonomy - Promote self-advocacy - Respect sensory needs (including stimming and ARFID) - Learn and teach through strengths and interests - Value neurodivergent communication - Presume competence - Adapt the environment, not the student
Staff received pin badges, kindly donated by Talos Foundation. The founders of this charity are JCSRS parents, and we are proud to support their work raising awareness of neurodivergence in the local Hong Kong community.
We are halfway through our week of celebrating and diving deep into the way we see our Neurodivergent students.
Today is all about "The Spiky Profile". In a traditional school, we often try to "round off" the spikes – trying to make a student "average" at everything. But in our world, those spikes are where the magic happens!
Think of our students like buildings. They have Superpowers (huge towers of talent), and they need Support Beams (help with the tricky bits).
If a student can name every stop on the Tuen Ma Line but struggles to hold a pencil, we don't take away the trains to force the writing. We use the trains to teach the writing!
Today's Neuroaffirming Nuance: We aren't "ignoring" weaknesses; we are accommodating them so the strengths can shine. If a student is a visual genius but struggles with verbal instructions, a simple picture schedule is the "support beam" that lets their "superpower" work.

To kick off Neurodiversity Celebration Week, we're starting with a simple shift in how we look at our amazing students.
Imagine our school is a garden. In a garden, you don't get mad at a cactus for being prickly or a fern for needing extra shade; you just change where you plant them and how much you water them! 🌵🌻
Today's Neuroaffirming Nuance: Instead of thinking, "How do I get this student to act 'normal'?", we're asking, "What kind of 'soil' does this brain need to grow today?"

JCSRS are galloping into the Year of the Horse with a wide variety of engaging experiences and performances. We wish everyone a wonderful, prosperous and healthy year ahead! 🐎
Our 40th Anniversary Fun Day was not only a celebration, but also a wonderful opportunity to connect with incredible organisations and partners that support neurodivergent students and adults in our Hong Kong community.
We were proud to have representatives from inspiring NGOs such as Youth Empowerment Service, The Nesbitt Centre, Sensational Foundation, ICHK Secondary and r é n, who shared information about their programmes and social enterprise products for sale.
A special thank you also to our corporate partner Manulife Hong Kong and Macau, whose team volunteered on the day and, just as importantly, provides vocational placements and meaningful work opportunities for neurodivergent young people.
It was especially meaningful to welcome back our alumni, who are now thriving in roles within these very NGOs: a beautiful illustration of our school's ethos extending beyond our walls and into the wider community.
It's through partnerships like these that we continue to build a more inclusive, supportive, and opportunity-rich community for all. Thank you for raising awareness and for being part of this important journey.

Celebrating All Our Children at the JCSRS 40th Birthday Fun Day!
The JCSRS 40th Fun Day was a celebration dedicated to every child who makes our JCSRS community unique – this includes our students, their siblings, friends, and the children of our staff and colleagues. The Fun Day was designed specifically for them: a day to recognise their achievements, friendships, and kindness, and, above all, to have fun.
It was wonderful to see so many children take to the stage to share their talents. From seasoned performers to those playing for the very first time, we were treated to beautiful music by the JCSRS Orchestra, including moving renditions of "Ode to Joy" and "You Raise Me Up", and a vibrant Lunar New Year dance that filled the day with energy.
Most importantly, we want to say a heartfelt thank you to all the children who brought the day to life with your laughter, your play, and your wonderful spirit. You made the celebration unforgettable!
